Start-up of the forklift business
A national expansion of the industrial machinery industry was promoted by Korea during the latter part of the 1960s. During that time, the forklift market in Korea was an open-import situation. Korea Machinery Co., Ltd. started to import forklifts which are assembled and sell them to big business groups, the armed forces and state-run companies. During the year 1976, Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. merged with Korea Machinery Co., Ltd. The corporation established sales and service outlets throughout the nation and, after a few years, opened its very own forklift production factory. Quality improvement and product development through continuous technical training were the plant's primary focus.

Expansion of forklift exports
The market share of Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd in the domestic forklift industry went as high as 90%. By the 1980s, the company's sales increases and technological improvements had attracted the interest of the American company, Caterpillar Industrial Inc. The two companies entered a joint-venture project in the early part of the 1980s to deal with competition faced by Caterpillar in the United States forklift market. Daewoo's forklift sales skyrocketed and another plant was built during 1984. Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. was then in a position to manufacture forklifts for export. In the early 90s, Daewoo went international with a worldwide sales network. New models were developed as an independent brand name using Korean technology.

Development of new models
Developed in 1998 was the G5 series, the first series of proprietary models. These models were 1800 kg - 3000 kg internal combustion trucks. A research effort developed core technologies for hydraulic systems, transmissions and engines. Many performance and durability tests have confirmed the quality of this new family of trucks. The company established reliability evaluation centers to guarantee the reliability of major components. These centers have garnered worldwide respect.

Well-known for its operator comfort and low environmental impact is the G5 series. The G5 is known throughout the globe for being reliable, operator friendly and durable. The series rated high amongst customers during large-scale, after sales surveys as part of a consumer-oriented marketing approach for these models.
