Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.

Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.

Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.

Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a battery and charging area. Never permit things like lighters or matches to be used when somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.

Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
