Counterbalance lift truck Training
OSHA does require operators using a counterbalanced lift truck to have received lecture style or classroom training. They also require that a periodic refresher training as well as a supervised driving course is finished. There is no required minimum time for the classroom training or supervised driving. In addition, there is no frequency mandated for the refresher training either.

Counterbalanced Forklifts
The weight of the counterbalance forklift is utilized to balance its cargo using its own weight. The forklift forks are in a fixed position but can be raised and lowered to secure and transport loads. The forks run parallel to the forklift's body. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that individuals who would be operating counterbalanced forklifts on the job be properly trained on the trucks while being in the environment that they would be using them.

Classroom Training
Training either in a classroom or lecture style would offer lift truck and driver information for the truck you would be using. Most training would cover several aspects such as the weight and load capacity, height, how to charge or fuel the lift truck. It includes how to gauge the time on the engine as well as any lift truck specific safety information including where to stand when walking around the truck. Either oral and/or written testing is part of the classroom training. There is no minimum time requirement for the training.

Supervised Driving
The driver of a lift truck would have to learn to use the machinery while being supervised. The supervised driving has to take place in an environment which resembles the existing environment which the driver works in. This atmosphere must include the kind of terrain she would be traveling on, have the same surrounding structures nearby, and the same vehicle and pedestrian traffic nearby also. There is no required minimum number of hours the driver has to drive while being supervised.
